“WhatsApp in Politics?!”: Collaborative Tools Shifting Boundaries

Abstract We examine the technological aspects of political collaborative practices in one first studies participatory constitution writing course its progression. In particular, we how digital and communicative tools can facilitate (or inhibit) permeation boundaries, which manifest through differences ideologies partisan beliefs. Our study is grounded interviews with 15 members Constituent Assembly canton Valais, Switzerland, primary contribution constructing a fine-grained contextualized understanding collaborations, their evolution, relationship tools. findings demonstrate centrality versatile widely available (such as WhatsApp Google Docs) work. addition, elected lawmakers prefer that allow them to organize actions based on dynamic social need for asynchronous work practices. observed tendency simultaneously using multiple accomplish specific objectives, leveraging plenary sessions strategic advantages. On hand, enabled advantages by selective boundaries across ideologies. other lack awareness about between ‘private’ ‘public’ networks were considered privacy blind spots. By focusing different kinds, our paper elucidates introduction technologies into process transforms long-established categories, distinctions divisions are often taken granted.
